Wednesday 3/25 - Simplicity

Hello all!! Wednesday brings us simplicity, which is oftentimes a component that is the most challenging and rewarding while on a VISION program. Due to our own individual privileges, we’ve come to depend on conveniences or luxuries and have many choices about how we spend our time. Before our teams depart, they usually decide together how to take with them only what they truly need. At our site, our choices may be limited by geography, money, transportation and safety. These limitations challenge our habits and help us examine the difference between needs and wants.

Perhaps this is the ultimate goal of living simply: to give our capacity for love our full attention and energy. Living simply is an attempt to live more authentically, to free ourselves up to express love in a more meaningful and undistracted way. Simplicity for the sake of simplicity is no good. The value of letting go is not simply that it is better to be empty-handed. Rather the point is that the alternative — clinging to whatever we can get our hands on — incapacitates us for anything greater.

During this time, we may be struggling with the idea of simplicity. For some, it may feel like nothing about life is simple right now and that the issue of COVID-19 has a complexity behind it that we cannot overlook. For others, the cancellation of events and the barriers of our home may be enforcing a more simplified lifestyle than we are used to.

Nonetheless, this time is an opportunity for us to simplify our minds and make intentional choices about the way we live. Having simplicity at the forefront of our minds – even for a day – can expose us to the richness of life without distraction.

Challenges:
  1. 1) Start the day with a clear mind free of expectations.
  1. 2) Be simple with food consumption.
  1. 3) Be aware of water usage today.
  1. 4) Set up some parameters for phone/electronic usage today. Whether that is a whole day without electronics or just a few hours, use that time to reflect or to do other activities.

Sincerely,
Emma, Alaina, Mackenna, Joey, Andrew M., Julia, Aria, Katie, Andrew S., Maddie, Thuy-Vy, and Noah
